If a sojourn on a tropical island means the beach to you, think again. There's a whole host of reasons to head for the hills on Koh Samui, and Baan Sai Tan is an inspiring case in point. Superlative views? Check. Consummate privacy? Check. Abiding breezes? Check.
Standing on the terrace of the villa's upper-floor lounge or master bedroom is akin to peering through the plane window just after take off. Absorb the island vistas at your leisure.
Although still relatively young, Baan Sai Tan shows maturity beyond its years, though not in a faded sense. The villa was built as a home rather than a long-weekender and is furnished with comfortable, stylish furniture throughout and gentle Asian touches. Clutter never enters the frame. As you float between the two downstairs bedrooms through the crafted tropical gardens to the ocean view pool, Buddha statues remind you of the heavenly location, and sprawling in the sunken sala by the pool certainly brings you closer to Tushita.
Nonsensical cliches like 'living the dream' begin to make sense when you're standing barefoot on the villa's lawn at sunset with a glass of Chablis. Thoughts of matrimony may also pour forth as Baan Sai Tan has 'bijou betrothal' written all over it and although it's something of a hike up the hill for the guests to reach, the multi-terraced design embraces flowing private gatherings. Staying on for the honeymoon, to share sensual soaks in the master bathtub or enjoy starlit barbecues before a midnight swim, also appeals.
Being up in the hills may mean that a little pre-expedition planning is required, but the 'never-say-no' live-in staff team of two are happy to head down the slope for provisions and, although you feel above it all, with a set of hired wheels you'll be contentedly 'far away, so close'.
